Minnesota State Sen. Scott Newman (R-Hutchinson) has called on Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) to make an apology to the National Guard for his "disparaging" remarks saying "they deserve better."
"The riots were so bad that the entire Guard was called out for the first time since World War II," Newman wrote in a statement posted on the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus website. "Yet the governor responds by insulting them?"
Newman's statement came after Walz downplayed the National Guard's qualifications and training by calling its members "19 year olds who are cooks." The Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus said Walz did so while reacting to Mayor Jacob Frey's (D-Minneapolis) allegation that the governor delayed sending the troops to stop the riots in his city.
"While he and Mayor Frey were dithering, those '19-year-old cooks' were busy rescuing Minneapolis," Newman said in a statement for the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus.
