Representative Dawn Gillman (R-Dassel) has responded to a recent Minnesota Supreme Court decision that reaffirms the Minnesota Human Rights Act prohibits public accommodations from excluding individuals based on transgender status. The ruling removes sex-based distinctions in girls’ and women’s sports across the state.

Gillman, who represents House District 17A, has been an advocate for maintaining separate categories in female athletics. She supported House File 12 earlier this legislative session, which aimed to clarify that participation in female sports would be reserved for biological females and uphold the original intent of Title IX.

In her statement following the court's decision, Gillman said: “Fairness in girls’ sports is worth fighting for.”

The issue centers on how state law interprets protections for transgender individuals and its impact on school and community athletic programs. The court’s ruling aligns with ongoing debates about gender identity and competitive fairness in youth and collegiate sports.
