Several new laws took effect in Minnesota on July 1, impacting a range of activities from motorcycling to fishing and hunting. Representative Dawn Gillman (R-Hutchinson) highlighted these changes in a recent update to constituents.

Motorcyclists in Minnesota are now allowed to practice lane filtering, which lets them move between lanes of slow or stopped traffic. The law prohibits this practice in school zones, work zones, and roundabouts. Drivers who block motorcycles attempting to filter may face a $50 fine.

The state has also lifted restrictions on bass fishing seasons. Anglers can now fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass throughout the year without closed seasons.

Watercraft registration fees have been updated, with proceeds supporting efforts to prevent invasive species and maintain public access to lakes and rivers across Minnesota.

A significant change for hunters is the repeal of the “shotgun zone” restriction in southern Minnesota. This rule previously limited deer hunters in that region to using shotguns, muzzleloaders, or handguns. With its removal, hunters have more options regarding their equipment during deer season.

Rep. Gillman recently attended a town hall event alongside Rep. Dave Baker, Sen. Andrew Lang, and Rep. Scott VanBinsbergen where they discussed community issues with local residents. She expressed appreciation for those who participated: “Huge thanks to everyone who came out to spend your afternoon with us. Your input, your energy, and your commitment to community are what make this work so meaningful. Let’s keep the conversation going!”

Gillman also recounted her experience at the annual Red Knights Western Rally in Deadwood with firefighters from various backgrounds: “Last weekend, firefighters, past and present, rolled into Deadwood for the annual Red Knights Western Rally — and what a blast it was! The brotherhood and sisterhood among the crew made the whole event unforgettable. My husband and I couldn’t be prouder to represent MN7 and be part of such an incredible chapter. Here’s to the fire service family that always has our backs!”

Ahead of Independence Day celebrations, Gillman shared her thoughts on the holiday’s significance: “This holiday isn’t just about fireworks, parades, and cookouts—it’s a time to reflect on the extraordinary gift of freedom we’ve been given, and the generations of Americans who’ve fought, served, and sacrificed to protect it...I’m proud every day to represent a community that cares deeply about those values: faith, family, service, and love of country...So from my family to yours: Happy Independence Day! May your skies be clear, your grill be hot, and your heart be full of pride for this incredible country we call home.”
